A family in Umbria
Casa Vissani grew out of a country-style family restaurant founded in 1963 near Baschi, in Umbria, where Gianfranco Vissani’s father Mario was owner and chief cook. Gianfranco built on those roots to create one of the most celebrated restaurants in central Italy, drawing on the rich produce of the Umbrian countryside.
Italy’s best chef
In 1982 the magazine L’Espresso voted Vissani the best chef in Italy, awarding him a perfect 20 out of 20 – a rating he held, alongside Heinz Beck and the Enoteca Pinchiorri, for more than twenty years. Casa Vissani went on to earn its first Michelin star in 1998 and a second in 1999, confirming his standing at the summit of Italian cooking.

A television star
Vissani’s fame spread far beyond the dining room through regular television appearances, especially from the 1990s. On screen he cooks and shares tips, but also delights in performing – dressing up, dancing and playing to the camera with irrepressible energy. This exuberant persona turned him into one of Italy’s best-known chefs and food personalities.
Signature style
Vissani’s cooking is rooted in Umbrian tradition and produce but rich, generous and inventive, reflecting his outsized personality. He treats regional ingredients with ambition and flair, and his food – like the man himself – is bold and full of character. It is a distinctly Italian blend of terroir and theatre.
