Katie Lee Biegel is living proof that a childhood spent in a small-town West Virginia kitchen can carry you all the way to the heart of American food television. Born Katherine Lee on September 14, 1981, and raised in Milton, West Virginia, she started cooking at the age of four at the side of her beloved grandmother Dora, soaking up a tradition of thrifty, soulful Appalachian home cooking that still flavors everything she makes today. Four cookbooks, a bestselling novel, and hundreds of Saturday mornings on national television later, she remains one of the warmest and most relatable voices in food media.

For twelve years she helped anchor The Kitchen, the Emmy-nominated Food Network talk show that wrapped its remarkable run of more than 500 episodes in December 2025. True to form, she barely paused for breath: in February 2026 she launched It’s Not Complicated, a YouTube cooking series filmed by her husband and a few friends, serving her simple, comforting recipes straight to home cooks everywhere. Add a weekly podcast, an organic wine label, and two Hallmark films to the mix, and you have one of the busiest and most cheerful careers in modern food entertainment.

From a West Virginia kitchen to the national stage

Katie Lee’s story begins in Milton, a small town in West Virginia, where she grew up surrounded by women who could really cook. Her grandmother Dora was her first and most important culinary teacher, welcoming her into the kitchen from the age of four. Her great grandmother won blue ribbons for her angel food cake, and the family table was a place of pride, generosity, and celebration. That Appalachian inheritance, the art of coaxing something delicious out of humble ingredients, has remained the through line of her entire career, from her earliest recipes to the cornbread and collard greens she cooks on camera today.

She studied journalism and food science at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, graduating in 2003, and spent a formative semester abroad in Florence, Italy, where her love of simple, ingredient-driven cooking deepened over market visits and long trattoria lunches. Fresh out of college she took a refreshingly hands-on route into the food world, helping to open Jeff and Eddy’s, a restaurant where she worked as the house fishmonger. In 2005 she co-created the early foodie website OliveAndPeach.com, sharpening the friendly, encouraging writing voice that would later fill four cookbooks and a novel.

A television natural

Top Chef and the early years

Lee’s television break came quickly. In 2006 she hosted the very first season of Bravo’s Top Chef, helping to introduce audiences to a format that would become one of the defining food competitions on television, and she later returned to the franchise as a guest judge on Top Chef All Stars in 2010. In 2007 she took a seat at the judges’ table on Iron Chef America, and over the following years she became a familiar, sunny presence across the dial, popping up everywhere from Paula’s Party and The Martha Stewart Show to Today, The Rachael Ray Show, and repeat appearances on Beat Bobby Flay. She also contributed food and lifestyle segments to The Early Show and wrote the weekly column Katie’s Kitchen for Hamptons magazine.

The Kitchen: twelve years of Saturday mornings

In January 2014, Food Network launched The Kitchen, a Saturday morning talk show built around a handful of hosts cooking, chatting, and swapping tips in real time. Katie Lee was there from the very first episode, and over the next twelve years the show became appointment viewing for home cooks across America. Alongside co-hosts including Sunny Anderson, Jeff Mauro, and Geoffrey Zakarian, she turned out easy weeknight dinners, budget-friendly shortcuts, and the comfort food classics that made her famous. The Emmy-nominated show ran for 40 seasons before airing its final original episode on December 13, 2025, and in her farewell message she thanked viewers for twelve great years and more than 500 episodes of cooking together.

Beach Bites and beyond

Her love of coastal cooking earned its own showcase in Beach Bites with Katie Lee on Cooking Channel, a series that sent her up and down the shoreline in search of the best seaside eats, and it was on that very set in 2016 that she met her future husband, producer Ryan Biegel. She has also fronted the digital series What Would Katie Eat? and Meat Sweats for Food Network’s website and served as a judge on Halloween Baking Championship, proof of a range that stretches comfortably from clambakes to candy corn.

It’s Not Complicated: a new chapter on YouTube

When The Kitchen wrapped in December 2025, fans did not have to wait long to see where she would turn up next. On February 17, 2026, she launched It’s Not Complicated on YouTube, a back-to-basics cooking series that shares its name with her 2021 bestseller. The show is a true family affair, filmed by her husband Ryan with help from a few friends, and the debut episode was pure Katie: pinto beans, collard greens, and cornbread inspired by her grandmother’s recipes. Announcing the series, she said she wants viewers to feel inspired and empowered enough to make every dish at home themselves.

The YouTube series joins a portfolio that keeps growing in delicious directions. Since 2024 she has hosted All on The Table with Katie Lee Biegel, a weekly Dear Media podcast dedicated to getting to know interesting people through food. In 2023 she co-founded Kind of Wild Wines, a line of certified organic, zero-sugar wines, and her Hallmark career has blossomed too: Groundswell (2023) brought her surfing novel to the screen with Katie as co-star and executive producer, and Catch of the Day (2025) saw her write, produce, and star in her own story.

Signature dishes

Katie Lee’s best-known dish is her Logan County Hamburgers, a recipe handed down from her grandmother, who grew up during the Depression in Logan County, West Virginia. Thin, savory patties enriched with egg and grated onion were a thrifty way to make a little meat go a long way, and the finished burgers, griddled and tucked into soft buns, are so good they won an award at the Burger Bash in New York City in 2009. Beyond burgers, she is loved for exactly the kind of food her shows promise: sheet pan suppers, breezy summer salads, slow-simmered pinto beans with cornbread, and desserts that taste like a family reunion. Her cooking philosophy is right there in the title of her latest cookbook and YouTube series: it’s not complicated, and that is precisely the point.

Katie is the author of books including The Comfort Table (2008), The Comfort Table: Recipes for Everyday Occasions (2009), Endless Summer Cookbook (2015), It’s Not Complicated: Simple Recipes for Every Day (2021).

Their daughter, Iris Marion, was born in September 2020, and the family shares their homes in New York City and Southampton, New York, with a rescue dog named Gus. Together they love traveling, art museums, collecting seashells at the beach, and an ongoing family quest for the best pizza and tacos.
